EMT Certification
UREMS organizes training classes for prospective EMTs, and its members host alcohol safety and awareness events, participate in continuing education training, and are involved in risk management services for the Weinstein Center for Recreation and Wellness.
Already an EMT?
EMTs certified in Pennsylvania or the District of Colombia can receive full reciprocity from Virginia. EMTs certified in any other state can gain reciprocity for one year or the amount of time left in the present certification, whichever is sooner. At the end of one year or the expiration of the current certification, EMTs must take the Commonwealth of Virginia EMT test to gain full Virginia certification. Please review Virginia's Basic Life Support Reciprocity, Legal Recognition, Equivalency for more information on out-of-state reciprocity.

Overview
If you are interested in becoming an EMT, U of R offers a class that runs for one semester. An announcement will be made when the application opens.
The EMT class will run two times a week in the evening, and some sessions will be held on a Saturday or a Sunday to prepare students for practical’s and the EMT test. Students will also be required to complete an ambulance ride-along before their final.
Members of the EMT class are eligible for Associate Membership of UREMS. This is a non-voting position, but members gain exposure to UREMS and can attend meetings, training events, and more. *Associate Membership does not guarantee Active Membership in UREMS. -
Course Application
The application for the 2025-2026 EMT course is not yet available. Please return for more updates.
