About the Department

Accreditation

The University of Richmond Police Department is presently one of only a handful of private institutions in the country that has a full-service law enforcement agency accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators. URPD is the first private institution and is currently the longest running university law enforcement agency to be accredited by CALEA and shares this distinction with more than 600 municipal, state and institutional police agencies nationwide. The University Police Department was reaccredited by CALEA for the tenth time in July 2022. For more information regarding URPD’s accreditation, contact the Public Safety Compliance Analyst Nick Myers at (804) 289-8818 or nmyers@richmond.edu.

Property and Evidence

The University of Richmond Police Department maintains a property and evidence section. This section is responsible for documenting and storing evidence from crimes and property turned into law enforcement by community members. If you have lost a valuable item on campus, contact Lt. Aubrey Blizzard at ablizzar@richmond.edu to see if it has been turned into URPD. Items of lesser value are usually turned into the lost and found at the Student Activities desk in the Tyler Haynes Commons.

Communications Center

The University of Richmond Police Department’s Communications Center is staffed at all times throughout the year. Regardless of your emergency or concern, the certified Communications Officers answering the phones will be able to provide you with assistance to move towards a resolution. With immediate access to police, fire and rescue emergency responders, the Communications Officers are the centralized location for individuals on the University of Richmond Campus to request emergency services. The Communications Center Supervisor, Jess Oliver can be contacted at jharvey@richmond.edu with questions, concerns or suggestions.

Patrol Division

The Patrol Division is staffed by 14 sworn and armed police officers who patrol the campus 24 hours a day, seven days a week — in marked and unmarked police vehicles, as well as on bicycles and on foot — to respond to all emergency and non-emergency incidents.

Investigations

The Detective Division is responsible for the investigation of all criminal offenses, which range from serious misdemeanor to felony crimes.

Security Division

The Security Division is staffed by four non-sworn and unarmed security officers, who are responsible for providing physical security for buildings and assisting police officers during certain events.

Public Safety Auxiliaries

Public Safety Auxiliaries are a non-sworn position with the UR Department of Public Safety. The primary function of a PSA is to provide additional support to Department of Public Safety Personnel such as: escorts, special events, reporting of problems, unlock requests and assisting URPD as needed while promoting the advancement of cooperative relationships within the University environment. PSAs act as the “eyes and ears” of the University of Richmond Police Department.

UR Emergency Medical Services (UREMS)

University of Richmond Emergency Medical Services (UREMS) is a student-run organization of dedicated first responders who offer assistance in the event of a medical emergency on campus. Members respond to 911 calls in teams of two alongside the University of Richmond Police 24 hours a day, seven days a week throughout the academic year.
