FAQ

How large is the University of Richmond Police Department?
We currently have 18 sworn police officers, seven security officers, and nine civilian employees. The sworn officers and security officers have a variety of duties including patrolling the campus and investigating crimes. Civilians serve a variety of functions from parking enforcement to staffing the communications center.
If I'm lost or need help, whom do I call?

Pick up one of the 27 yellow ERTS phones on campus. They are located at many locations across campus and can easily be identified by the blue light affixed on top of them. This will connect you direct to the University of Richmond Police Department Communications Center.

In an on-campus emergency, call 911. If you do not have an emergency, dial x8715 from any campus phone and you will be connected to the communications center.

What happens if I dial 911 on my cell phone?

When you dial 911 on your cell phone, you will be connected to a local emergency communications center––not the University of Richmond Police Department.

Depending where you are on campus, you could be connected to the Henrico County Emergency Communications Center, the City of Richmond Department of Emergency Communications, or Chesterfield County Emergency Communications. You will need to give specific information to the communications center you speak with and ask to be transferred to our department.

We recommend you use a land-line phone or an ERTS during a campus emergency to ensure you are connected with the University of Richmond Police Department Communications Center.

Can I dial 911 on the pay phones on campus?
Dialing 911 on a campus pay phone will connect you with the City of Richmond 911 center, not the University of Richmond Police Communications Center. We recommend that you use a land-line phone or an ERTS phone during a emergency on campus to ensure you are connected with the University of Richmond Police Department Communications Center. If that is not possible, we recommend you give as much information to the jurisdiction you speak to and ask to be transferred to our department. Your information will be given to us and we will send whatever assistance you need.
How safe is campus?

Crime statistics for the last three calendar years are available here. If you have any questions about the information, please contact us. We will be glad to review the document with you.

I am living off campus this semester. Does the University Police Department respond to my apartment complex?
No. The University of Richmond Police Department does not respond to calls for service off campus––it is outside of our service jurisdiction.
Where can I get information about sex offenders?
Visit the Virginia State Police sex offender registry.
Can I report a crime online?
You can use our Silent Witness Program to anonymously report information to the department.
Do you do fingerprinting for employment purposes?
We will be happy to assist any student of the University that needs to have fingerprinting done for employment purposes only. Fingerprinting is done Monday–Friday from 9–11 a.m. and from 1–3 p.m. Students are required to provide their own fingerprint cards. We recommend you call us at 289-8715 to ensure someone is available to assist you.
Can I get a copy of my criminal history?

The University Police Department can only provide criminal history checks for authorized law enforcement agencies. If you would like a copy of your own criminal history, you may obtain one through the Virginia Department of State Police.
